Jett & Fritter Grab Season 1st Wins at the Bullring

Shawn Jett

(Middlebourne, WV)  June 28th, 2014   After a week off the Tyler County Speedway roared back into action as the Annual Legends Night was on tap and a pit full of 113 race cars hit the ‘Bullring’ to pay homage to their heroes.  Picking up season first wins were Shawn Jett and Tracy Fritter while Sonny Conley and Travis Thomas notched their second checkered flags of the season with perennial winners Bird Wilson, Bill Tennant and Brady Reed also grabbing victory.  A very popular win was picked up by Robbie Thomas in the Legends race as the former speedway great showed no rust in wheeling his borrowed hotmod to victory.

It was all New Martinsville, WV’s Sonny Conley making a clean sweep in picking up his second J&R Excavating Super Late Model presented by Midcap Land & Timber main event.  Conley would set fast time, vault from his sixth starting spot in the dash to claim the win and dominate the feature event.  Conley would lead Steve Wilmoth in his 2014 maiden voyage at the ‘Bullring’, Butch McGill, Steve Weigle and Donnie Dotson across the line.

Sistersville, WV’s Bird Wilson would go from wrecker to checker in an unbelievable turn of events that would see the Modified Hall of Famer be carried off on the double hook after a dash incident.  A lot of thrashing pitside and a lot help from other teams would see the blue #20 make the call for the start of the Two Brothers Motorsports Modified main event.  Wilson would claw his was from the sixth starting spot and grab the lead when race long leader Donnie Nething slowed entering turn one with motor issues.  Once Wilson was in front he managed to hold off last race winner Junior Nolan and season best performances from Cody Eaton, Kurt Burge and Tony Tatgenhorst to pick up his third win of the season.

Shawn Jett of Salem, WV would garner his first win of the season in the Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Model division.  Jett aboard the ASC/Slicks Detail Shop/Slicks Laundromat 1J Rocket would hold off all challengers in picking up the popular win.  Behind Jett was a spirited race long battle among Joel Prosser, Danny Thomas and Kyle Thomas as the pack battled in and out of lap traffic throughout the main event.  Following Jett were Prosser, Danny Thomas, Kyle Thomas and Derek Rogers in the highly competitive division.

Twenty three Modlites would take to the ‘Bullring’ with Tracy Fritter of Zanesville, Ohio picking up his seasons first win.  A rough and tumble main would see the field come to an abrupt halt after a grinding crash on the front stretch catching up to eight cars in the melee including many front runners.  Once the race resumed it was Fritter pacing the field with Travis Holmes dogging the leader lap after lap as the lead duo were heading out of four toward the checker contact was made between Holmes and Fritter sending Fritter spinning.  Officials would reward Fritter with the win.  Fritter pilots his own Eliminator chassis/ Extreme Motorsports machine and bested Randy Kerns, Jim Ruckman, Tom Keplinger and Gabe Phillips across the line.

A terrific Hotmod main event would see Middlebourne, WV’s Travis Thomas pick up his second feature win of the season.  Thomas would have to work high and low in trying to get around race long leader Mick Baker and with a couple laps to go Thomas would use the highside to his advantage to grab the lead and the win.  A tight battle behind would see Baker, Chad Smith, Kenny Isner and Levi Flesher round out the top five.

Collier, WV’s Bill Tennant would continue his hot streak as he would go on to win his fourth consecutive 4 Cylinder feature and sixth of the season.  Tennant would beat Donnie Wamsley, Robert Frohnapfel, Jason Frazier and Scott Critchfield across the line.

Brady Reed would win a very close and competitive JJK Mineral Mini Wedge feature over Dalton Anderson, Kylie Cross, Roo Roo Dotson and Steve Frazier.

Coming up next week a double header of excitement will kick off with a Friday Night, July 4th special as the Monster Trucks return to the Tyler County Speedway.  Be sure to bring the kids as the mighty Monster machines of the Equalizer, Red Solo Truck and Bad News Travels Fast will partake in car crushing action.  Also on the card will be the Mini Wedge National Championship, Hotmods, Modlites and 4 Cylinders.  Gates open at 4, with racing getting underway at 7.  General admission is just $15, pits $20, children 7-12 $5, kids 6 and under FREE.  For more information contact 304-771-6874 or visit us on the web at www.tylercountyspeedwayonline.com.

13th Annual Eaton/Childers King of the Ring Set to Hit the Highbanks of the Bullring

photo (3)

(Middlebourne, WV)  As the 40th season continues at the Tyler County Speedway and the summer season hits high gear, not only is the temps on the thermometer rising but so is the intensity at the ‘Bullring’.  At the midseason point of one of the most competitive seasons to date at the Tyler County Speedway the attention will now turn to the J&R Excavating Super Late Model division presented by Midcap Land and Timber.  This Saturday Night, June 21st will be the tradition laden 13th Annual Eaton/Childers King of the Ring Invitational, featuring Twin 25 lap $1,500 to win main events.  A race in honor of two speedway icons, Beecher Eaton and Bill Childers.  Join us as we celebrate the memory of long time speedway supporter and patriarch of the Eaton racing family Beecher Eaton and past speedway track champion the late great ‘Wild’ Bill Childers driver of the familiar #03.

Last season’s event was classic Tyler County Speedway as the Hometown Racing Association debuted a new format for the Eaton/Childers King of the Ring, featuring twin late model mains with a full inversion for the second feature.  A thrilling race that would see the ‘Gambler’ Paul Wilmoth Jr. pick up the win in the first feature and with the inversion Wilmoth would lineup in the 12th starting spot and blast his way around the cushion on his way to sweeping both feature events and becoming the first 3 time winner of the Eaton/Childers King of the Ring.

Six different winners have graced the Tyler County Speedway victory lane so far in 2014, with Butch McGill and Derek Doll leading the way with two feature wins each and Jacob Hawkins, Mike Benedum, Sonny Conley and Davey Johnson also grabbing single checkered flags.

A complete program of JJK Mineral MWRA Mini Wedges, Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Models, Two Brothers Motorsports Modifieds, Hotmods, Modlites and FWD 4 Cylinders will also be in action.  General admission is just $15, with pit passes at $35, children 10 and under free.  Gates open at 4, MWRA Mini Wedges get underway at 6:15 with hotlaps/qualifying beginning at 7.  For more information contact John Watson at 304-771-6874 or visit www.tylercountyspeedwayonline.com.

Seven Notch Wins on Turn Back the Clock Night

Benedum

Another huge crowd welcomed 115 eager racers to the ‘Bullring’ as the Hometown Racing Association presented ‘Turn Back the Clock Night’.  Dollar Dogs and fifty cent popcorn served as appetizers but it was Mike Benedum, Kyle Thomas, Junior Nolan, Mick Baker, Mitch Ward, Bill Tennant and Kylie Cross who served up the main course in picking up feature wins at the Tyler County Speedway.

It was all Salem, West Virginia’s Mike Benedum driving the BSI Well Service/Blackrock Enterprises #25 to a convincing win in the J&R Excavating Super Late Model presented by Midcap Land and Timber A Main event.  Benedum would chalk up win #1 of the season at the ‘Bullring’ and bested Derek Doll, Steve Weigle, Butch McGill and Sonny Conley in the process.

2013 FASTRAK Champion Kyle Thomas of Pennsboro, WV would lay claim to his 4th Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Model win of the season.  Thomas pilots the Powells and Sons Farm/Thomas and AJ Logging/Dodd’s Sporting Goods/ Slicks Auto Detailing Rocket machine.  Following Thomas across the stripe was Shawn Jett, Joel Prosser, Danny Thomas and Troy Frazier.  Kyle Thomas picked up the King of the Kounty win over Joel Prosser.

It was only appropriate that on Turn Back the Clock Night, St. Clairsville, Ohio’s Junior Nolan did just that.  The former track champion and veteran racer hadn’t won a Two Brothers Motorsports Modified feature event at the ‘Bullring’ since 08’.  The semi-retired Nolan showed little rust in displacing race long leader Mike ‘Bird’ Wilson with a daring high side pass.  Nolan would lead Wilson, Codi Eaton, Gerald Deitch and Kurt Burge  across the line.

Shinnston, WV’s Mitch Ward would notch win #3 of the season in the Modlite division.  Newcomer Travis Holmes would look poised to pick up his 1st ever Tyler County Speedway win but a late race caution and a great restart by Ward would be all the driver of the 862 needed in picking up the victory.  Following Ward and Holmes across the line were Tom Keplinger, Beau Newlon and Gabe Philips.  Travis Holmes won the King of the Kounty event over Jeff Fornash.

Mick Baker of Middlebourne, WV would pick up his 2nd win of the season in the Hotmod division.  The driver of the Swiger Oil and Gas/ Doug’s Custom Vinyl/ Autozone #47 would hold off a hard charging Travis Thomas to earn the hotly contested win.  Following Baker and Thomas were Cody Brightwell, Chad Smith and Chris Ice.    Travis Thomas would pick up the King of the Kounty win ahead of Chad Smith.

Leading all Tyler County Speedway racers with win #5 was Collier, WV’s Bill Tennant in the FWD 4 Cylinder division.  Tennant has found a home in the ‘Bullring’ victory lane once again and finished ahead of Donnie Wamsley, Robert Frohnapfel, Mike Frazier and Scott Critchfield.

Kylie Cross earned the hard fought win in the JJK Mineral MWRA Mini Wedge Feature.  The youth league of auto racing seen twenty youngsters take the green.  Cross would pick up the popular win ahead of Brady Reed, Roo Roo Dotson, Dalton Anderson and Steve Frazier.

Bring General Admission armband back from last week, get in for just $5!

(Middlebourne, WV)  As the summer season heads into high gear, the Tyler County Speedway will look to follow up last week’s very successful ‘Pack the Track Night’ with another fan friendly event billed as ‘Turn Back the Clock’ Night.  In celebration of the speedway’s 40th Anniversary season, the Hometown Racing Association is turning back the clock by offering $1 hot dogs and .50 cent popcorn specials at the ‘Bullring Bistro’, while also inviting all fans born in 1974 FREE admission (ID required).

Also as part of last week’s awesome turnout, speedway promoter John Watson made the announcement to all fans in attendance, just bring back your armband from Pack the Track Night and get in for just $5 bucks!  It’s all part of a season long effort to show fans that there’s never been a better time to be a Tyler County Speedway fan as we celebrate forty years of continuous operation.

The region’s most fan friendly ‘action packed’ race track continues to hold the line against rising costs by offering the areas lowest prices, while managing to provide fans of all ages the most exciting and diverse schedule in the Tri-State area.

“It’s just our way of saying thanks in these tough economic times and give our fans some breaks this season, while also showcasing the ‘Bullring’ experience to many new fans,” stated a Hometown Racing spokesman.  “We take great pride in knowing Tyler County Speedway is an affordable place to have a great time with friends and family.  We think it’s very important to give back to the fans who have continued to support the Tyler County Speedway over the years and help make it the coolest Saturday Night destination in the area.”

What’s on tap this week at the regions most fan friendly facility?  It’s Turn Back the Clock Night featuring something for everybody!

As we head into the mid-point of the season, several heated point battles are taking shape making the second half of the season quite intriguing.  Forty year veteran of the ‘Bullring’ Butch McGill looks poised for yet another championship in the J&R Excavating Super Late Model division presented by Midcap Land and Timber.  A very competitive Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Model division has defending champ Kyle Thomas leading the pack hotly followed by Derek Rogers and Robbie Scott.  Modified Hall of Famer Mike ‘Bird’ Wilson looks headed for another championship at Tyler County to add to his illustrious modified resume.  A tight battle rages in the Modlite division with Brandon Fluharty leading Mitch Ward and Jeff Fornash.  In the Hotmod division it’s defending title holder Chad Smith clinging to the top with a host of others close by.  Donnie Wamsley and Bill Tennant are slugging it out in the FWD 4 Cylinder division while Kylie Cross and Brady Reed are in a dogfight for the JJK Mineral MWRA Mini Wedge crown.  This Saturday Night will be crucial in determining 2014 track championships as its Mid-Season Championship with double points on the line.

A special thanks goes out to ALL the drivers of the ‘Bullring’ who were very instrumental last week in spreading the word about ‘Pack the Track’ Night.  Those earning pole positions for their respective divisions last week by virtue of bringing the most fans to the speedway were:
