Hawkins Repeats In 19th Annual Topless 50

jacob hawkins

A perfect evening for racing welcomed eager race fans to the 19th Annual Topless 50 where it was a familiar face sitting in victory lane as young Jacob Hawkins would repeat his performance from a year ago in capturing consecutive Topless 50 wins.  The win would not be easy as Hawkins ferociously worked from his 5th starting spot to hound early race leader Keith Barbara until he made his move as a spirited battle ensued as the lead duo came upon heavy lapped traffic.  The Fairmont, West Virginia driver would eventually pull away aboard the St. Henry’s Nightclub/Melvins Transmission sponsored 2OH Rocket.  Hawkins joins Paul Wilmoth, Butch McGill and Chuck Harper as multi win victors in the Topless 50. Seventh starting Mike Benedum would eventually grab the bridesmaid spot, followed by a nice run from Pennsylvanian Jared Miley who would march from 13th on the grid to grab third at the line, with 14th starter Derek Doll and Corey Conley rounding out the top five.   Picking up heat race wins were Barbara, Wilmoth and Shane Hitt.

A stout field of Two Brothers Motorports EDGE Modifieds would take to the Bullring with teammates and fellow Renegade of Dirt Mod pilots Tanner Wilson and Nathan Loney taking the top two spots.  The pair of would go door to door midway through the race as the lead duo would go back and forth with young Tanner Wilson of Zanesville, OH eventually picking up his first ever Tyler County Speedway win.  Loney would finish second, followed by ‘bullring’ veteran Bird Wilson, Jess Hartman and Junior Nolan.

Kyle Thomas would three peat in the Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Model division as the Pennsboro, WV hotshoe has been unstoppable at the bullring so far in 2013.  An early race melee that claimed five cars would pave the way for another Thomas rout as he was unchallenged to remain perfect on the season.  A hotly contested battle for positions 2nd thru 5th would see Michael Griffin edge Danny Thomas while Brandon McGrady edged Joel Prosser by a nose at the stripe to claim the 4th position.

In the Chris Metz State Farm Insurance ModLites it was perennial and defending track champ Brandon Fluharty of New Martinsville, WV vaulting from his 6th place starting position to grab his 1st win of the season.  Fluharty pilots the Main St. Salon, C.S. Loy Construction, Bridgeport Tool, Raptor Chassis #25.  Completing the top five were Matt Ward, Ryan Baker, Jim Ruckman, and Randy Kerns.

Middlebourne, WV’s Travis Thomas would lay claim to his second consecutive Hotmod win aboard the familiar #18.  Thomas would hold off a charging Tom Sigler, Chris Thomas, Brad Dickson and Lou Ennis across the stripe as Thomas appears poised for another run at the EDGE Hotmod National Championship.

A stong field of 19 youngsters kicked off the evening in the MWRA Mini Wedges with the “Little Ice Man” Jacob Ice going back to back as he held off Kaitlyn Frazier, Georgie Tennant, Alec Frazier and Kylie Cross.

Next Saturday Night, May 11th the Bullring will sit idle but will roar back on the 18th with the Jackpot 100 and Let It Ride Qualifiers, plus provisional spots will be up for grabs in all other classes as well for the big Memorial Weekend event.  Plus its Late Model driver appreciation night as all Super Late Model racers will receive a free pass courtesy of Hometown Racing.  Plus it’s Candy Rush for the Kids!

Fast Family Feast Night Results; 19th Annual Topless 50 Up Next

photo (3)

(Middlebourne, WV)  With mother-nature turning the thermometer up after last week’s bone chilling season opener race fans were greeted to a much warmer night of racing action at the Tyler County Speedway. It was Fast Family Feast Night and Gold Rush for the Kids, while the kids were busy feasting and panning for gold it was Paul Wilmoth, Deanna Groves, Kyle Thomas, Travis Thomas, Rick Ament and Jacob Ice striking it rich on the track. Another smooth and efficient nineteen race program was ran off in a little over three hours on the lightning quick speedway and had the final checkered flag of the evening waiving at 10:30.

In the J&R Excavating Super Late Models presented by Midcap Land and Timber it was the “Gambler” Paul Wilmoth Jr. from Clarksburg, WV aboard the infamous B1 overtaking early race leader Sonny Conley to pull away for his first victory of the season.  Wilmoth, once in the lead would cruise aboard the Midcap Land and Timber/Adkins Timber/Quick Time Suspension/NAPA Barry Wright mount in the last tuneup before this week’s prestigious 19th Annual Topless 50.  Completing the top five on super fast race track was Sonny Conley, who made an incredible move on the initial start as he blasted around the high side passing three cars to set the early pace before falling to second.  Finishing third was Butch McGill, Scott Irvin in a very impressive run and Steve Weigle.  The lightning quick 25 lap Late Model main event was ran in just seven minutes from green to checker.

Making it two in a row was Pennsboro, WV’s Kyle Thomas in the Peoples Bank FASTRAK late model division.  Thomas would hold on over a charging Danny Thomas in the caution marred event.  Rounding out the top five were Bill Shaffer, Brandon McGrady and Kris Southern.  Thomas was aboard the familiar #32 Grover, ASC, Joy’s Disposal, Dodd’s Sporting Goods, NAPA, Thomas & AJ Logging mount.

In the EDGE Hotmods it was last years track champion and EDGE Hotmod National Champion Travis Thomas garnering his first win of the early season aboard the Norman Jackson Trucking, Sigler Fabrication #18.  After a long week of hard work putting his car back together after a hard crash at the West Virginia Motor Speedway the previous week, many wondered if the reigning track champ would even race let alone sit in victory lane.  Thomas was quick to thank Sigler Fabrication in victory lane for their help getting his battered hotmod back to the track and into victory lane.  Following Thomas across the stripe were Chad Smith, last weeks winner Mike Conkle, Kenny Isner and Codi Eaton.

In what was the wildest event of the night, the Two Brother Motorsports Modifieds would take to the track with crowd favorite Deanna Groves picking up her first ‘bullring’ win of the season piloting the Melvins Transmission/Tri Valley Equipment/ Two Brothers Outlaw by Shaw GRS 2.  Early race excitement would see outside front row starter of #17 JE Stalder out drag the GRS 2 into the first corner pounding the cushion and bicycling almost flipping before settling on his wheels but unfortunately ending his night.  When the action resumed it was an intense battle behind Groves among those in the mix was an impressive Chris Basich, Travis Dickson, Mark Dickson and Vic Vandergrift.  Vandergrift was the man on the move clawing his way to the front before a late race spin would negate his fine run to the front.  Rounding out the top five behind Groves were Basich, Travis Dickson, Mark Dickson, and Bird Wilson.

Rick Ament driving the #27 would lay claim to the Chris Metz State Farm Insurance Modlite A Main.  Ament would make a thrilling last lap pass of defending track champion Brandon Fluharty to secure the hard fought win in a rare Tyler County appearance.  Rounding out the top five were Fluharty, last weeks winner Josh Baldwin, Mitch Ward and Tom Keplinger.

In MWRA Mini Wedge action it was the “little ice man” Jacob Ice claiming the spoils as he held off Katlyn Frazier, Georgie Tennant, Alec Frazier and Philip Bubeck across the stripe.

Derek Doll Grabs 39th Annual Season Opener at the Bullring

derek doll

(Middlebourne, WV)  A cool and crisp evening awaited the Tyler County Speedways faithful for the 39th Annual Season Opener.  A pit full of racers and a nice crowd of brave souls weathered the frigidly cool temps as the green flag would officially wave on the 2013 season.

An awesome opening ceremony would set the tone for a highly competitive evening of action as the Tyler County Speedway paid a special tribute to Veterans and last seasons track champions before local singer Nancy Kester would perform a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

A quick moving program would see the first checkered flag of the season waive at 9:20 for the J&R Excavating Super Late Model division presented by Midcap Land and Timber.  Young Derek Doll of nearby Greenwood, WV piloting the infamous Doll Bros. machine pull off a clean sweep as he would click off the fast time of the evening, garner a hard fought heat race win and go on to pick up his first win of the young season.  Rounding out the top five were Paul Wilmoth, Sonny Conley, Butch McGill and Daniel Hill.

In the Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Model division it was the reigning 2012 EDGE champion, Kyle Thomas of Pennsboro, WV picking up where he left off garnering the workmanlike victory after marching from his 7th place start.  Following Thomas across the strip were Joel Prosser, early race leader Bill Shaffer, Mike Griffin and Brian Baumberger.

Perennial ‘bullring’ modified ace Mike “Bird” Wilson would notch victory #1 of the season at the Tyler County Speedway aboard the familiar unsponsored #20.  Wilson would have to work diligently to outmuscle early race leader Tommy Powell as the duo would race several laps side beside before Wilson was able to pull away and snare the win.  Rounding out the top 5 were Powell, Gerald Deitch, Kurt Burge and Devin Verardi.

In the race of the night, a strong field of 21 EDGE Hotmods squared off with Cheshire, Ohio’s Mike Conkle out dragging race long leader Kenny “Radar” Isner coming out of turn 4 on the last lap to pick up the early hard fought victory.  A wild mid race battle would ensue as Isner, Conkle, Travis Thomas and Chad Smith would race high and low swapping lanes and passes as they fought thru lapped traffic in classic ‘bullring’ fashion.  When the dust cleared however it was Conkle picking up the elusive first win of the 2013 campaign.

A strong contingent of Chris Metz State Farm Insurance ModLites took the green with Beallsville, OH’s 34n of Josh Baldwin crossing the stripe first.  Eighth starting Tommy Keplinger would finish second, followed by Mitch Ward, 2012 track champion Brandon Fluharty and Jeff Fornash.

Kicking off the program was Zack Carr piloting the #7 picking up the MWRA feature followed by Georgie Tennant, Jacob Ice, Kaitlyn Frazier and Kylee Cross.

Hometown Racing Association to Lease and Promote the 39th Season at Tyler County Speedway

(Middlebourne, WV) The newly formed Hometown Racing Association is pleased to announce an agreement has been reached to lease and promote the Tyler County Speedway for the 2013 season.

The Tyler County Fair Association agreed to turn over operation of the ¼ mile Bullring to the Hometown Racing Association headed up by lifelong resident and former racer John Watson. Watson and the new promotional group plans to continue the long tradition of weekly Saturday-night racing.

“We look forward to providing the Bullrings die-hard fan base with a solid family fun exciting brand of racing fans and competitors of Tyler County Speedway have come to expect at the areas raciest speedway,” stated Watson.

Exciting news regarding the new Tyler County Speedway and the 2013 racing season which will see the high banked Bullring receive a much needed facelift as a new racing surface will greet anxious racers to the speedway when action gets set to begin this spring.

“We are extremely excited to offer our outstanding roster of weekly racers a brand new surface, a long overdue task will be undertaken with the help of J&R Excavating of Moundsville, WV. Over 200 loads of fresh clay will redecorate the surface of the Bullring” continued Watson.

A mid to late April opening night is planned with a full schedule to be released in the coming weeks. Watson wants to put a much needed emphasis on having a strong and efficiently run weekly program in which show quality, track maintenance, and driver appreciation are of utmost importance to the new group. Five weekly divisions will comprise the new “FANtastic 5” weekly show featuring the high powered Super Late Models, Crate Late Models, EDGE Modifieds, EDGE Hotmods and ModLites plus the MWRA Mini Wedge division will continue to kick off festivities at each and every show.

When the 39th racing season at the speedway is shown the green flag a Transponder Scoring and Timing System will also be in place. All driver’s are required to run a transponder unit in 2013 when taking part in the action at the Tyler County Speedway. “We feel like this will be a major step towards one of our goals on running a more efficient program each week. The new technology will eliminate any risk of human error while also allowing drivers to log on to dedicated websites for real-time updates which can be a useful tool for participants race night setups” added Watson. Competitors have asked for this improvement for several years and we are happy to be able to be bring this new technology to the Tyler County Speedway. Look for more in depth information regarding our Transponder System in the upcoming days.

The Hometown Racing Association was enticed to operate and assume control of the local speedway that holds a special place in their heart when the highly regarded speedway became available. After discussion with the fair board and other local racing personalities the Hometown Racing Association is excited about the future of the speedway and the opportunity to provide a family venue for local race fans, and participant’s to gather and enjoy spending their Saturday night’s.

“I grew up at Tyler County Speedway, it’s where I started going to races as a fan and later enjoyed competing myself so I know the history and tradition of the place and I’ve seen the great racing that has been happening there for so many years. I’m excited to have a chance to promote the track and keep the tradition of showcasing some of the best racing the entire country has to offer. Our goal is to provide a entertaining grassroots level racing program by getting back to the basics and working to build a firm foundation for future growth” stated Watson.
